Centennial committee holding poster contest for promotional artwork

• Designs must be submitted by Aug. 31 to the Downtown Bookstore

The Craig Centennial Committee is working the 100-year celebration plans like a homesteader proving up a claim, with a number of events already suggested.

One item of note is the 100-year birthday for the Craig involves the celebration itself lasting for 100 days.

On April 21, 1908, officials signed the charter creating the Northwest Colorado town, and that date in 2008 will start a 100-day celebration, launching themes that will be included in the Grand Olde West Days and Whittle the Wood events.

Under consideration for the centennial are an air show featuring vintage airplanes, a skydiving performance by the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights, tours of the Mack farm with its “centennial farm” status, a concert, various Museum of Northwest Colorado displays and exhibits and presentations from some of the valley’s elder residents.

Involving school children in events was high priority for committee member, and Chamer of Commerce executive director, Christina Currie.

Craig/Moffat County Airport board member Ken White has been checking into airplanes available for a Craig event through museums and vintage aircraft organizations. A fly-in golf tournament at the Yampa Valley Golf Course also was a consideration.

A poster contest is planned to find artwork to promote the events involved in a centennial celebration, possibly with a children’s category included.

Fireworks and a barbecue likely will be included, as well as a “Taste of Craig” event with a sampling of local dishes.

The Black Mountain Theater group is planning to present “Where Valleys Widen,” the same play that was performed in 1958 at Craig’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Local businesses and corporations are being contacted for donations to support the projects, and three levels of contributions are being considered.

One priority item the committee discussed is the creation of an official logo for the centennial.

Souvenir mugs, coins, hats and shirts will be adorned with the logo, as well as advertising promotions and other centennial collectables.
