Development and rumors

What is coming to town, what is not

— Each spring, a flurry of builders, developers and landowners descend on the city's building department with visions of new offices, stores and warehouses.

Each summer about mid-July, townsfolk began to wonder where is all the previously reported development in town, and what about the fast food restaurant and new hair salon Aunt Betty heard about?

Adding to the rumor mill is the current construction of Wal-Mart, and what stores will follow.

The official source to find out what's true and not true: the city of Craig.

All applications and building requests go through the office of Dave Costa, the city of Craig community development director.

Costa's desk is loaded with blueprints plans and sketches of buildings. And when the rumors meet the city office, the desk is where the buck stops.

So, here are some of the rumors and whether they are true of not.

4-Plex-movie theater

Last year, reports of a movie theater opening on property behind the Super 8 Motel at First Street and Colorado Highway 13 surfaced.

After talk of possibly increasing the project to a six or eight-plex theater, the timetable for construction remains in question.

"We have received no formal application yet from the owner," Costa said.

Walgreens

The Walgreens application to build in Craig is currently in the rezoning and re-subdividing stage.

Costa's office has received the building improvements and designs, and the Jim's Tire location on west Victory Way has been purchased by Walgreens and has been found to be asbestos free, clearing the way for demolition.

Sonic Restaurant

While many people want it to come to town, the only word about the fast-food chain is this: "Rumors," Costa said.

Bad To The Bone

At one time planning on relocating to the area next to the proposed movie theater, the local barbecue restaurant's owner is re-evaluation his options at this time, Costa said.

Home Depot

"Rumors," Costa said.

Abby Carpet

Expansion plans for the flooring dealer on east Victory Way continue, with the parking and landscaping plans submitted and the construction plans expected, "maybe this week," Costa said.

River Ranches Beef Processing Plant

A beef processing facility complete with a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector is planned for north of town on Yampa Avenue, featuring a small operation producing organically raised beef.

Currently, plans are being checked, and the city awaits re-submittal of plans after initial review.

Kum & Go

The west and north Kum & Go stores are both facing complete rebuilding in the near future, with the demolition of two neighboring houses completed at the north Yampa Avenue site.

Camilletti Office

Darrell Camilletti has submitted a land use and site plan for a two-story insurance office to be located on the western half of the former Cosgriff Hotel property on Victory Way.

The city is waiting to hear back from 42 property owners located within 300 feet of the site for their comments on the project.
