It's all about working with people

New pastor comes to Craig Church of Christ from Texas and California

Patrick McCary has got some plans for the small, cozy church on Green Street.

McCary, a Texas native, is taking over as pastor of Craig Church of Christ, 795 Green St., and is hoping to put the church on the map.

"My biggest goal right now, it sounds kind of strange, is to push for vacation Bible school," McCary said. "We want to be visible enough in the community and get as much of the community to come in as we can."

McCary moved to Craig with his wife, Heather, and three-year-old daughter, Elena. Heather is pregnant and due in February.

This is McCary's third preaching position. He previously spread the Word in San Diego, California and rural Texas.

McCary studied broadcast journalism before entering the clergy. He said theology interested him more, and he later enrolled in the Brown Trail School of Preaching in Bedford, Texas.

"The more I became involved, the more I decided this is the direction I wanted to go," he said.

Now, between shopping for a house and digging through moving boxes, McCary is making time to prepare for his calling.

On Thursday, he was sitting in the warm church preparing Sunday's sermon as light from the windows bathed the pews.

When asked why he's a pastor, McCary said it's all about working with people.

"I love working with and helping people," he said. "I'm one of those guys who will give you everything, and go above and beyond the call."
