Eighth-grade hoops team wins third title in row

Three years, three tournaments, three titles.

That is what an eighth-grade boys basketball team accomplished this weekend, winning the Rifle Parks and Recreation-Alpine Bank Three-on-Three tournament Saturday at Rifle Middle School.

Moffat County's team, comprised of Brady Conner, Casey Jackson, Mark Dockstader and Brian Davidson, had to play each team in the tournament field in order to be seeded in the afternoon bracket. Moffat went undefeated in the morning sessions and was seeded No. 1 going into the championship round.

In the morning games, the eighth-grade boys defeated Basalt, Rifle and a tough Glenwood Springs team, which was led by eighth-grader Kevin Flohr -- who was the runner-up national champion in the Elks National Hoop Shoot contest in 2006 -- to advance to the championship for the third straight year.

Led by Flohr, the Glenwood squad battled a tough Rifle team to advance to the championship against Moffat County.

The championship game was a physical contest but Moffat used a smothering pressure defense and a relentless offense to prevail.

The Bulldogs were victorious, capturing their third championship in a row in the space of three years. This victory culminates a record of 17 wins compared with one loss in the three years in which they attended the tournament.

Sixth-graders finish first, fourth at tourney

Two Moffat County Youth Basketball Association/Gold Crown sixth-grade boys teams finished first and fourth, respectively, at the Rifle Parks and Recreation-Alpine Bank Three-on-Three tournament Saturday at Rifle Middle School.

The red team, comprised of Michael Jurgensen, Josh Pritchard, Garrett Buckley and Paul Laliberte, finished first, winning all six games.

The red team won the title by defeating a Rifle team in a triple-overtime, sudden-death victory.

The gold team, comprised of Tyler Ratkowski, Garrett Stewart, Michael Story and Chris Goucher, finished fourth.
