State warns of tainted peanut butter

Health officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment warned consumers Thursday not to eat jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter with the product code on the lid that begins with 2111.

Those jars are at risk of Salmonella Tennessee contamination. Consumers are advised to throw away containers of the affected peanut butter.

Salmonella is a bacterium that causes foodborne illness. Consumers experiencing symptoms associated with Salmonella -- diarrhea, fever, dehydration and vomiting, among them -- after eating the affected peanut butter should contact their health care provider immediately.

There have been 10 cases in Colorado linked to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak. There have been 288 cases of foodborne illness reported in 39 states due to the consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter.

There have been no deaths caused by the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control reported.

ConAgra manufactured the affected jars in a Sylvester, Ga. The Food and Drug Administration has sent investigators to the ConAgra processing plant to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for Salmonella Tennessee.

ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with the product code 2111 that was distributed. The company is also destroying all affected products.

The company will also cease production until the cause of contamination is identified, the department of health and environment reported.

Consumers with the recalled peanut butter are asked to discard the jars, but save the lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan or Great product lid along with their name and mailing address to:
