— Composed of 20 members, the Craig Rotary Club is a relatively small group, club president Randy Looper said.

He likes it that way.

When there's a job to be done, everyone's involved, he said.

Preparing for the service group's largest annual fundraiser is no exception.

The Diamonds and Spurs dinner dance fundraiser, now in its eighth year, requires Looper and fellow Rotarians to begin selling tickets more than a month in advance.

Like the club's other activities, the event is a group effort.

"Everyone has to pitch in to make it work," Looper said.

The group's work culminates in a formal affair that hosts approximately 220 people and raises nearly 90 percent of the club's annual funds.

This year, the club aims to raise $8,000 - a little more than it did last year, Looper said. To reach that goal, the club will have to sell 200 to 240 tickets.

That goal may not be hard to reach.

In previous years, ticket sales have been limited more by space availability than community interest, Looper said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the club's local service projects, including providing books to local children and displaying American flags on holidays throughout the year.

The Rotary Club also offers a $1,000 scholarship to the Colorado Northwestern Community College nursing program and two other scholarships, totaling $2,500, to Moffat County High School seniors.

The club keeps the local proceeds from Diamonds and Spurs so donors can see their contributions at work. The club puts other funds toward projects it completes throughout the world.

Last year, the Craig Rotary Club donated computers and software to a career development program in South Africa, Looper said.
