Newspaper upgrades printing press

— Work begins this week on a printing press expansion at the Steamboat Pilot & Today facility in Steamboat Springs. When complete, the revamped press will double the number of full-color pages available in the Craig Daily Press, Steamboat Pilot & Today and Steamboat Today.

As a result of the expansion, which is expected to take about a week, the Craig Daily Press and Steamboat Pilot & Today will operate with earlier deadlines for both the advertising and editorial departments. The deadline for classified ad sales will be 2 p.m. during the expansion; the deadline typically is 3 p.m.

Craig Daily Press Publisher Bryce Jacobson and Steamboat Pilot & Today Publisher Bryna Larsen urged readers' patience during the press expansion. They said newspaper sections and features may be rearranged, and there will be limited color availability for the next week.

"It will be a challenge to put out papers while the work is ongoing, but it will be well worth the effort once the end result is attained," Larsen said.

The press upgrade is the first such upgrade since the Steamboat Pilot & Today moved from its former downtown Steamboat Springs location to its current site at 1901 Curve Plaza in west Steamboat. The printing press currently has the ability to print eight pages of full color and eight pages of spot color for every 48-page section. After the upgrade is compete, as many as 16 pages of full color will be available in a 48-page newspaper. That number will increase with newspapers larger than 48 pages.

"It's just another added bonus for our readers to have full color in as many as 16 pages of the Craig Daily Press," Jacobson said. "It's something our readers want, and I'm happy we will be able to provide it for them."

The project is led by WorldWest LLC General Manager Suzanne Schlicht and pressroom operations manager Dan Schuelke.

"I think this speaks to the investment that our ownership is willing to make in our small community," Larsen said. "We want to bring the most dynamic newspaper product to our readers every day. We know nothing reads or looks as good as full color. It has been a tremendous undertaking."

Advertisers with questions about deadline changes or what the press expansion could mean for them should call the Craig Daily Press at 970-824-7031, Steamboat Pilot & Today advertising director Scott Stanford at 970-871-4211 or their advertising representatives at each newspaper.

The Craig Daily Press, Steamboat Pilot & Today and Hayden Valley Press are owned by WorldWest LLC of Lawrence, Kan.
