Swim team qualifies individuals, relays for state

The Moffat County High School boys swim team beat host Glenwood Springs but lost to Durango and Grand Junction high schools Saturday.

MCHS coach Patti Worsley said the team did well as it prepares for postseason competition later this month.

"We beat Glenwood and we're getting really close to the other teams," Worsley said. "It was good because they were training really hard."

Kyle Steitz recorded his best time in the 200-yard freestyle in with 1 minute, 54.85 seconds. He also came in third in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.83.

The 200 free relay team of Tyler Kalsow, Steitz, Trenton Taylor and Cole Worsley set a season best time of 1:37.92 while qualifying for the 4A state championships.

In the 100 butterfly, Cole Worsley came in first in 57.76, his best time of the year.

The 400 relay team of Kalsow, Andrew Aultman, Steitz and Cole Worsley placed first in a time of 3:42.86.

Individually, Aultman made the most of his first time in the 500 free with a fourth-place time of 6:09.32.

"He did an excellent job," Patti Worsley said. "We are going to train him even more this week and see if we can get a state time."

In the 50 free, Taylor came in seventh place in 26.25.

Kalsow came in fourth in the 100 free in 55.08.

Donny Penner took four seconds off his best 100 free time en route to a 1:04.33 finish.

Overall, Patti Worsley was happy with the results.

"We did really well," she said. "The kids stepped up and did what they had to do. Now some of these guys will begin their tapering for regionals and state."

MCHS joins Glenwood Springs at 4 p.m. Friday in a triangular meet at Montrose.

Western Slope League competition is May 10 and 11 at Durango. The time is to be determined.
