Baseball heads to postseason play

April 29, 2007

Jake Satterwhite would have been proud.

The Moffat County High School baseball team completed its regular season with a 12-1, 10-6 doubleheader sweep of Eagle Valley on Saturday at Craig Middle School.

The Bulldogs had two brief ceremonies between the twin bill -- the first to honor seniors Brad Grinstead, Billy Ivy and Bryan Richards, and then an emotional remembrance of the late Satterwhite, who died six years ago in a car accident.

MCHS (11-3 league play, 12-6 overall) used aggressive play and continued its hot bats under the sizzling sun against the Devils (6-8, 8-10).

"They've always had a good program, and this year is no different," Eagle Valley coach Ken Reagan said of MCHS.

"In my eyes, they have the best pitcher in the league in Billy Ivy and the best hitter in the league in Richards."

The Devils got on the board first with one run in the top of the first inning, and the Bulldogs didn't waste any time responding.

Josh Satterwhite put MCHS up, 2-1, with a two RBI double, and a Devil throwing error allowed him to advance to third base.

With a wild pitch to Jordan Williams, Satterwhite scored the third run for MCHS.

Leading 3-1, Anthony Flores laced an RBI single to right field to increase the lead to 4-1.

Halen Raymond led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run over the left field fence, making it 5-1 MCHS.

Richards hit a monster, two-out home run for a 6-1 lead.

Flores recorded another RBI in the bottom of the third, lacing a double to make it 7-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Richards hit a RBI single to extend the lead to 8-1. Shortly after an Eagle Valley pitching change, Satterwhite added two more RBIs with a line drive to right field, giving the Bulldogs a 10-1 cushion.

Satterwhite scored on a wild pitch and Flores added another RBI on a high hopper to the shortstop for the final score of 12-1.

"We're more loose now, and more aggressive both on the bases and at the plate," MCHS coach Rich Sadvar said. "That's the way we like to play and when we are effective it puts pressure on the opposing defense.

After an emotional ceremony honoring Jake Satterwhite, the late cousin of junior pitcher and right fielder Josh Satterwhite, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Richards gave MCHS a 1-0 lead after Grinstead tripled.

Ivy made it 2-0 with a sacrifice RBI.

Satterwhite took the mound in the bottom of the first inning and the Devils knotted the score at 2-all before Sadvar settled his hurler down after the inning.

A two-run home run by Eagle Valley left fielder Kevin Mansfield gave the Devils a 4-2 lead in the third inning, and the Devils added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-2 advantage.

Satterwhite began the Bulldog rally in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, and Flores made it 6-5 with a two-run double to left field.

Chris Winder drove in Raymond with an RBI double in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 6, and Grinstead followed that with a RBI single up the middle for a 7-6 lead.

Satterwhite hit a RBI double to make it 8-6, Williams used a sacrifice fly RBI for a 9-6 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Grinstead laced a RBI double to centerfield for the final tally of 10-6.

"My arm is really not that healthy. I really wanted to win this one for my cousin," Satterwhite said afterward.

MCHS begins post-season next weekend. Opponents and locations are to be determined.
