Alarm prevents further damage

Smoke detector awakens man to upstairs fire

April 29, 2007

An elderly man living alone in a residence in the 800 block of Taylor St. was asleep on his living room couch Saturday evening when the sounds of a smoke detector startled him awake.

A fire had begun in the upstairs bathroom, and the man quickly called for help, averting a situation that could have been much worse, Craig Fire/Rescue deputy chief Bill Johnston said.

"The good part is the guy had a fire alarm in the house," said Johnston, citing that the alarm prevented further danger during the fire. He added, "That's the way it's supposed to work."

About 20 firefighters responded to the structure fire at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The fire, which Johnston believed was started by an electrical problem with the bathroom's baseboard heater, caused about $10,000 to $15,000 in damage.

Most of the damage was confined to the bathroom. "Overall (the fire) wasn't so bad," Johnston said.

No one was hurt during the blaze, which firefighters worked for about two hours before securing the home.
