With a combined six home runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Battle Mountain, the Moffat County High School baseball team made the 19-0, 18-0 wins look like batting practice.
MCHS improved to 10-3 overall while the Huskies remained winless at 0-13.
"Moffat County has some really well-disciplined kids and is a well-coached squad," Battle Mountain coach Jason Spannagel said.
"They're a good team, but it's really hard to gauge exactly how good they are because we are so young and inexperienced."
The Bulldogs hit on all cylinders in game one as the bats lit up the scoreboard and senior pitcher Brad Grinstead stymied the Battle Mountain bats with a complete game, 62 pitch no-hitter that included nine strikeouts and one walk.
"I threw a shutout in Little League one time, but that's about it," Grinstead said of the no-no. "For awhile there I didn't feel like I had anything, but I guess it worked.
"I threw two off-speed pitches the entire game and just tried to stay on top of the ball," Grinstead said.
Grinstead helped his own cause by batting 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI.
Jordan Williams started the rout with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and Josh Satterwhite deposited the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, Grinstead hit an RBI double past a diving Battle Mountain shortstop to make it a 5-0 game.
Freshman Halen Raymond increased the lead with a three-run home run one inning later, giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
Austin Sadvar hit a double off the left field fence, and Chris Winder drove him home with a RBI single making it 9-0 MCHS.
After the Bulldogs loaded the bases, Williams was walked to make it 10-0.
Bryan Richards ripped a two-RBI single to right field, making it 12-0, and Satterwhite ended the inning with an RBI fly out for a 13-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Winder took away a potential base hit with a diving catch deep at the shortstop position.
Grinstead ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
Sadvar ripped his second double of the game in the bottom of the fourth, giving MCHS a 14-0 lead. Winder cranked a two-run home run to make it 16-0, and Grinstead greeted the new Battle Mountain pitcher with a stand-up double to right field.
Richards continued the hit parade with a three-run home run to right field, ending the scoring at 19-0.
Grinstead struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning, adding an exclamation point to the victory.
"He threw the ball very well, his control was good and he threw a lot of strikes," MCHS coach Rich Sadvar said of Grinstead.
Second game, nearly identical score
The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the second game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
Satterwhite connected for a, RBI double for the first run and Billy Ivy added a two-RBI triple to the left field fence for an early 3-0 lead.
Grinstead led off the top of the third with a walk and then stole second base.
On a deep fly out to center field from Richards, Grinstead showed his speed by tagging up and narrowly missing a close play at the plate for a 4-0 advantage.
Ivy led off the top of the fourth with a single, and after stealing second and third base, Raymond drove him home with an RBI single.
Winder, the game two starting pitcher, made it 6-0 with an RBI single of his own and Winder cleared the bases with a three-RBI double for a 9-0 lead.
Richards hit a two-run home run to left field for an 11-0 advantage.
A balk on the Battle Mountain pitcher allowed Satterwhite to score the 12th run, Anthony Flores made it 14-0 with a double to center field, Sadvar hit another double for the 14th run and Winder's bases loaded walk made it 15-0.
A balk from new Battle Mountain pitcher brought Williams home to extend the lead to 16-0, and Richards hit a two RBI double to end the scoring at 18-0.
"Their pitching really threw us for a loop, but I guess we did a good job of adjusting to it," Richards said of the off-speed pitches.
MCHS coach Sadvar said he was highly impressed with the patience his team showed at the plate.
"Thirty seven runs against zero is always a good weekend of baseball," he said. "I think they came out at a good time. Hopefully we'll go into Eagle Valley with confidence."
The Bulldogs finish regular-season play Saturday against Eagle Valley. The doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Craig Middle School.
