Preseason loss no worry for Bulldog hockey


The Moffat County Bulldogs club hockey team started their pre-season Saturday, playing two games against the Glenwood Springs Grizzlies.

The first game Glenwood started the scoring with 2 minutes 33 seconds left in the first period and added another goal with 39 seconds left to end the period with a 2-0 lead.

The second period, the Bulldogs came alive with two scores of their own.

The first came from Bryce Ponikvar, on the assist from Scott Smith at 11:17.

The second Bulldog goal was scored by, David Wooden at 4:15, but before the second period ended, the Grizzlies answered with two more goals.

Glenwood tacked on another goal in the third period to end the game with a 5-2 victory. Bulldog goalie Curt Ellgen stopped 17 of 22 shots he faced and Bo Boatright lead the Bulldogs in penalties.

The first period of the second game was scoreless with Spencer Wayman between the pipes for the Bulldogs. Wayman turned away all 7 shots he faced in the time slot.

The Grizzlies started the scoring at 11:16 in the second, but the Bulldogs found an answer when Mike Snyder scored with an assist from Cole Dubios.

At the end of two periods the game was tied 1-1.

The Grizzlies started the third period with another goal, but 40 seconds later the Bulldogs put one in the back of the net.

Scott Smith scored the tying goal and an assist was credited to Mike Lefler.

The Grizzlies then put two more goals past Wayman for 4-2 lead.

James Reiman answered for the Bulldogs putting them down just one goal, and 20 seconds later Lefler scored to tie the game 4-4. The game remained tied until the Grizzlies found a hole with just 4 minutes left in the game.

Wayman turned away 23 of the 28 shots he faced. Mike Snyder and Ethan Robinson led the Bulldogs in penalty minutes.

The next games for Bulldog Hockey will be Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. against Grand Junction.
