Girls basketball heads to Utah tournament

"Go, go, go."

That phrase was uttered constantly by Moffat County High School girls basketball coach Craig Mortensen Thursday afternoon in the gymnasium, as the team ran through last-second scenarios in the final minutes of practice.

The Bulldogs could be counting on last second shots this weekend, facing some of the toughest competition they'll see all year.

The Bulldogs head to Vernal, Utah, today and Saturday to play in the Uintah Classic. This is the 12th year Mortensen has taken the girls team to the tournament.

"We're getting better," Mortensen said after practice. "This week we worked on the things we needed to."

Mortensen said the more the girls play together, the better they're getting to know each other.

Senior center Cayla Maneotis and sophomore guard Jorgiea Raftopoulos said that they were ready to get back on the court in a game situation.

"We're excited," Maneotis said.

Of the schools participating at the Classic, Ogden and Wasatch -- Utah schools -- have won state titles in the last 10 years. Wasatch won in 2002, and Ogden took the title in 1996.

"They play at a high level," Mortensen said of the Utah schools. "We'll see a lot of different things," noting the Bulldogs will see man defense, zone defense and full-court presses, and the teams they are scheduled to play will run a combination of different offenses, with some slowing it up to play a half-court game and some speeding up to try to beat the Bulldogs in transition.

Maneotis and Raftopoulos said that from their past experience, the Utah teams are more aggressive and physically bigger than teams they see in Colorado.

Mortensen pointed out that this tournament could be what the Colorado state tournament is like.

The biggest thing Mortensen would like to take out of the weekend is to see his team.

"We'll be playing a high level of competition, and we'll have to do things the right way," Mortensen said. "We've got to figure out everybody's role, and after this weekend I think we'll have a better idea."

Last year the Bulldogs went 3-0 at the Uintah Classic.
