The Secretary of State last week issued a final reminder to businesses that, starting Tuesday, all business names must be filed with her office.
In 2004, Gov. Bill Owens signed a law that requires all trade names be filed at the Secretary of State's Office, instead of some being filed with the Department of Revenue and others at the Secretary of State.
"This is a tremendous im----provement to the efficiency of Colorado's government and will consolidate all trade names in one location," Secretary of State Gigi Dennis said. "We have also implemented new electronic filing for trade name registrations and will reduce fees to $1 per registration at the Colorado Secretary of State's office."
Trade name filings provide the public with a means of determining with whom they are doing business. If more than one record exists for the same trade name, the information provided in the trade name registration should provide adequate information to distinguish between the businesses.
The public may file and search business entity and trade name documents on the Secretary of State's Web site at www.sos.state.co.us. For more information about trade name registration, click on the "Business Center."
The Colorado Secretary of State's office is closed today in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Because of the implementation of the online trade name application, many of the online filing and searching features on the "Business Center" Web site will be unavailable over the holiday weekend. All online services will be available on Tuesday.
A couple of business-owning Bells are creating some confusion in Northwest Colorado.
The owner of All States Surplus Outlet stores in Craig is named Steve Bell.
The owner of Hayden Auto Body also is named Steve Bell.
But the two men aren't related and neither are the businesses.
Cydne Bell, wife of the Steve Bell who owns Hayden Auto Body, said since All States opened in January, quite a few people have asked if her husband is the same Steve Bell who owns the store in Craig.
Cydne said it isn't a problem, but she wants to make sure people know there are two Steve Bells in the region.
