Bulldogs upset in 3,200

Battle Mountain takes surprise win in Day 1 of regionals

— There weren't a lot of surprises at Friday's Class 4A regional track meet, but the boys 3,200-meter relay was an exception.

Moffat County's quartet of senior Derek Duran, juniors Jeremy Bird and Jake Miller, and sophomore Mike McNicol had easily defeated teams in the region all season. Battle Mountain shocked the field by running a 14-second season best to beat the Bulldogs by three seconds.

"They came out of nowhere," Duran said. "We have somebody to shoot for at state."

The Bulldogs ran a season best 8 minutes, 7.54 seconds.

"We can't be too disappointed because we ran the best we have this year," Miller said. "Battle Mountain stepped it up today."

Eight days ago freshman Alicia Nelson stepped it up by shaving 20 seconds off of her previous best in the 1,600 to pre-qualify for state. On Friday, she didn't improve on her time again, but she finished second and helped the 3,200 relay team (sophomores Angie Charchalis and Jorgiea Rafto--poulos, and junior Jeacey Robin--son) to a second-place finish.

"I've felt better the last two weeks," she said. "I took some pressure off myself for this weekend by pre-qualifying, and I ran a personal best in the 800 during the relay."

The girls team finished the day in fourth place with 31.5 points. Eagle Valley led the meet with 52 points. "We're still in it," coach Todd Trapp said. "It hurts us that we don't pole vault, but we could still find a way to win if we run really well tomorrow."

Eagle Valley and Battle Moun--tain are the only teams in Class 4A to pole vault, so the regional pole vault was held earlier in the week. Eagle Valley earned 17 points in the vault.

There was a pleasant surprise on the girls side from freshman thrower Myiah Bengston. She threw a two-foot personal best in the shot put to finish fifth. Bengston went from throwing 23 feet in the first meet of the year to 32.075 feet at the regional meet.

"I worked on my form and lifted weights a lot this year," she said. "I beat some girls I hadn't beat all year so, it felt good to end like that."

Other points earners for the Bulldogs were: sophomore Markie Workman, who finished fourth in the high jump and sixth in the triple jump; freshman Danielle Brockman, eighth in the high jump; junior Amber Suits, sixth in the 1,600; Bird, fifth in the 1,600; sophomore JT Haddan, 124 feet, 10 inches in the discus for seventh.

In the qualifying races, three Bulldog boys qualified for the finals in the 200. Senior Jake Bilodeau and juniors Andrew Drake and Sam Weeldreyer ran in different heats and made it into today's final.

"It all depends on where you sit in the prelims," coach Gary Tague said. "In the 100, we had two guys in one heat, and it didn't work out. In the 200, they were in different heats, and they all made it."

In the 100, Malcolm Hillewaert didn't make it into the finals despite running one of the seven fastest times because a heat winner ran slower. Heat winners automatically qualify for the final no matter the time. Bilodeau and Drake qualified for the finals.

Trapp said junior Kiera Moore's ability to make the finals in the 100 and 300 hurdles was a highlight because she came into the meet ranked out of the top eight in each event.

The boys finished the day in fifth place with 14 points. Battle Mountain led with 33 points.

"There was a lot of good stuff today," Tague said. "It was about what we expected."
