Mike G. Thomas, 88, passed away April 28, 2006, in Grand Junction. He was born Oct. 8, 1917, in New Brunswick, N.J., the son of Nick and Evanth--a Prevelanak--s Thomas. Mike's parents emigrated from the Island of Crete.
When he was 3, Mike's parents journeyed West, settling in Superior, Wyo.
In1942, Mike enlisted in the Army to serve his country during World War II. His deployment was the 503rd Quarter Master Car Company, and he received the rank of Staff Sergeant Motor Transportation. His service took him to Normandy, Northern France, Andennas, Rhineland and Central Europe. Mike's Honorable discharge from active duty was given November 1945.
Mike met and married Dorothy Beeler on April 3,1947. He owned and operated the Beeler Coal Mine, in Savery, Wyo. The business later became The Thomas Coal Mine where he worked for 18 years. In 1963, the family moved to Craig, where Mike continued his mining career, retiring in 1979 from Empire Energy.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Savery, Wyo.; daughter, Margaret (Bill) Dickson of Logan, Utah, and Colstrip, Mont.; daughter-in-law, Kris Thomas of Savery, Wyo.; grandchildren Allison (Kurt) Chaffin of Logan, Utah, Will (Nicole) Dickson of Logan, Utah, Alan (Jeanine) Dickson of Herford, Ariz., Johnny (Kari) Thomas of Grand Junction, Michael (Trisha) Thomas of Grand Junction, Jason (Judy) Thomas of Savery, Wyo., and Becky Thomas of Grand Junction; 13 wonderful great-grandchildren; sister, Jenny Millet of Las Vegas; brothers, George Thomas of Parker and Harry Thomas of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Kaye and Holly, grandsons Michael Dickson (1999), and Jake Thomas (2002) and his beloved son John Thomas (2006).
Memorial donations may be made to the Encampment Wyoming Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in care of Grant Mortuary.
Services were held Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Dixon, Wyo.
Prelude and postlude were by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Opening prayer, obituary, sermon and closing prayer were by Pastor Roger Domeny. Mike's family and friends shared memories and Marget Dickson gave a life history. Allison Chaffin read, "Footprints in the Sand."
Pallbearers were John Thomas, Jason Thomas, Alan Dickson, Michael Thomas, Will Dickson and Kurt Chaffin. Honorary pallbearers were all of Mike's friends.
Interment was in Reader Cemetery in Savery, Wyo. Alan Dickson gave the dedication of the grave. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 presented military honors.
