AAA predicting a pinch at the pump

Experts say spring break travelers increase demand, driving up prices

March 19, 2006

It's the last thing consumers want to hear, but gas prices are back on the rise.

Gas prices in metro Denver jumped between 10 and 20 cents a gallon last week.

Experts attribute the increase to a high seasonal demand brought on by spring break travelers.

Prices in Craig are up, as well.

A gallon of unleaded in Craig in December sold for about $2.40. Last week, the price was $2.54.

The average gallon of unleaded fuel in Colorado was $2.46 last week, up 23 cents from a month ago, according to AAA Colorado.

AAA doesn't list average gas prices for Craig, but in the two closest markets AAA tracks, prices were lower than Craig's. In Glenwood Springs, a gallon of gas went for $2.64 last week, up from $2.47 last month. In Grand Junction, a gallon of unleaded cost $2.45, up from $2.20 last month.

Nationwide, the average price of gasoline was at $2.49 a gallon Friday -- 56 cents lower than Sept. 5, when the average price reached an all-time high of $3.057 a gallon, according to AAA's daily fuel gauge report.

AAA's report can be found at www.aaafuelgaugereport.com.

Gas prices typically rise from February to the summer months, when prices tend to peak.

Electrical association to hold elections

The Yampa Valley Electric Association announced last week the date for its annual meeting, at which members will elect three new people to the board of directors.

The annual meeting will be held June 17 at the Hayden High School auditorium.

Three seats on the association's board of directors will be up for grabs at the meeting.

To be nominated, candidates must have at least 15 association members sign their petition.

Petitions must be filed by May 3 at the association offices, P.O. Box 771218, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
