Moffat group heads
to disc golf tournament
A group of local women is headed to Utah for a disc golf tournament and is looking for teammates.
On June 24, the Utah Women's Disc Golf Champ--ionship will be at Creekside Park in Salt Lake City. Tourna--ment play will consist of two rounds of 18 holes. There will mixed doubles and a barbecue on June 25.
The first 25 registrants will receive a player's pack that includes an embroidered sport shirt. For players who would like a caddie, services will be offered by some of Utah's finest male golfers.
Elisa Shackelton, director of the Colorado State University Extension Office in Moffat County, said the sport is an excuse to get outside for exercise and health benefits. She urges any woman interested to start playing disc golf and plan now to join her on a road trip to Utah in June.
Shackelton said skill level does not matter. Those who are interested can start practicing this spring at the new Loudy-Simpson Disc Golf Course.
To register online, visit www.nudga.org/page5.html. Those who are interested in this tournament but have never played before should sign up for the recreational level. Transportation and lodging can be arranged for a Moffat County group to travel together.
The extension office also offers ways to learn the sport. Instructional videos are available for check-out, and practice discs can be borrowed for those who want to try playing before investing in their own discs.
Also, new Colorado Disc Golf Course Directories are available at the extension office and Instant Replay Sports, 18 W. Victory Way. The Colorado disc golf course directory is $2.
Created by a Moffat County High School student, sale of the directories will go toward a local disc golf youth scholarship, as well as the further development of the Loudy-Simpson Disc Golf Course.
For information on disc golf or the tournament, call Shackelton at 824-9180.
Homeschool drama club plans production
"Heavenly Hollywood," the Homeschool Speech and Drama Club, will present three one-act plays for their spring production on March 23 and 24 at the Craig Middle School auditorium, 915 Yampa Ave.
In their third year of existence, club director Bonnie Reiman sees the production as "a big task for our small group" of 12 members.
Performing for the first time in a large auditorium venue, Reiman is confident in her group, but knows "it will be a big step, with everybody doing double-duty as both actors and stagehands."
Reiman selected three plays from the 1940s. The show will open with the cowboy drama "Western Night" by Robert Finch and Betty Smith, followed by Spranger Barry's comedy "Cupid's Bow." The production will end with the biggest act of the night, the romantic mystery, "Fog on the Bay" by Clarice Wardall.
"It will be something different happening in town during spring break," Reiman said.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time is at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
For information, call Reiman at 826-4427.
