Meth defendant considers plea
The lawyer for a Craig man charged with methamphetamine distribution, assault and motor vehicle theft, said Wednesday that her client needed more time to consider a plea agreement before accepting it.
The District Attorney's Office has offered Shaun Philip Sanchez, 26, of Craig, a deal that would send him to prison for 10 years, his lawyer, public defender Sheryl Uhlmann, said during a court hearing Wednesday.
Sanchez was one of 15 people charged in a major meth sweep in December. At the time of the sweep, Sanchez was in jail on charges of motor vehicle theft, domestic violence and assault. Police arrested him in early December after a four-hour standoff at his home in Craig.
During the hearing in 14th Judicial Dis--trict Court on Wed--nesday, Uhl----mann said Sanchez needed more time before he could accept the agreement.
"Obviously, it is a significant chunk of his life," Uhlmann said of the prison sentence.
Chief Judge Michael O'Hara set Sanchez's next hearing for March 14.
Uhlmann told the judge that Sanchez, who has been in Moffat County Jail since December, needed time to talk to his family and figure out custody for his children.
