Road crews will sweep roads again three to five days after the roads are chip-and-sealed. Call the Road and Bridge Department at 824-4463.

The fliers, which were distributed by the Craig Road and Bridge Department, stated that from Monday to Sunday, streets in Craig would be swept, washed, chip-and-sealed and swept again.

Chip-and-sealing is a process of putting oil onto roadways and covering it with a layer of gravel, Road and Bridge Director Randy Call said.

Call said roads had to be swept and washed for the chip-and-seal process to work.

The fliers listed streets that were going to be chip-and-sealed and requested that residents refrain from parking on streets 24 hours before the sealing.

"We have to have access to the street," Call said.

Fliers also listed requests that residents refrain from watering their lawns, keep pets indoors and tell children not to walk or ride their bikes on newly sealed streets.

Call said there will be a waiting period between when streets are sealed and when excess gravel and oil is cleaned.

"We hope to be done (sealing) Friday afternoon," Call said.

He added that the crew would start sweeping the streets Saturday and would be finished by Sunday evening.

The chip-and-seal process is a lengthy one, but it is necessary to keep Craig's streets maintained, Call said.

"This is the most cost-effective surface treatment there is to prolong the life of asphalt," Call said.

Call said the city of Craig has about 50 miles of road that require sealing, making it a five-year project.

"We (chip-and-seal) 10 miles of city streets every year," he said.
