Maria Elena Garcia Knez (Helen Mary) was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Vallecitos, N.M., to Jose Pedro Garcia and Maria de los Angeles Trujillo Garcia. She grew up in northern New Mexico and attended school there until the eighth grade because she needed to care for her mother. She instilled the importance of education in her children and grandchildren.
