The motocross action at the Yampa Valley Sportsriders Club on Saturday and Sunday may be the Zulians' last.

The races featured roughly 500 riders in 84 races. The Rocky Mountain Motocross Association sanctioned the District 25 event, and it was the final series of races that the Zulian family -- Dan, Patty, Donna and Gary-- hosted, after organizing the races for the eight years.

"It's been a good run. We've put a lot of years and races into this track," Donna Zulian said.

With the Zulians retiring from the racing circuit, there is much speculation as to what will happen with the track.

"We have a lease on the track until 2009," Donna said. "The Sportsriders Club will still be able to practice and train, but we don't know if there will be races on it. We have had several parties express interest in continuing to hold races here though."

Those who come to race have complimented the Zulians on the job they have done.

Dan Pederson, of Lakewood, has been out to the track more than once watching his son Jon Pederson race.

"Of all the races we've been to, this one has run the smoothest," Dan Pederson said.

Rob Powers, who has been the announcer at the track for five years, shared a sentiment of respect for what the Zulians have done.

"After the years they have had, we are not disappointed to see them close this chapter in their life. We all have so much respect for what they have done out here," Powers said.

"The track in Craig is the premier track in District 25 motocross racing. It's the hidden gem within Moffat County."

Powers said the track has provided an outlet for Moffat County youth to focus on alternative sports, evidenced by how many entries were from Moffat County and the surrounding area.

"This gives kids an adrenaline outlet," he said. "They're not going out and doing things they shouldn't be."

Although the Zulians are finished, Powers believes that people will continue the tradition the track has built.

"They are going to have races on this track," Powers said. "What the Zulians have done here has transcended into something big."

A majority of the local racers who participated in the District 25 motocross series on Saturday and Sunday at the Yampa Valley Sportsriders Club competed in the open beginner's class.

Ben Fulton, of Hayden, finished third in the open beginner's class with 30 points, while Craig racer Greg Merrick finished fifth with 27 points. Nick Navratil, of Craig, also finished in the top 10, coming in eighth in the beginner class.

In the 51cc class 2 for 7- and 8-year-olds, local youth Jeb Gowdy finished seventh, with two points.
