14-year-old hospitalized for alcohol poisoning
A 14-year-old girl was flown to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction for alcohol poisoning Saturday night.
She was admitted to The Memorial Hospital emergency room with alcohol poisoning, and when she was deemed unresponsive, Flight for Life was called, said Moffat County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Courtland Folks.
One person has been interviewed, and an investigation is under way, Folks said.
Folks said friends brought the girl to the hospital, and that they had been drinking at the Yampa River near Yampa Valley Golf Course.
Folks added that this was the summer's first serious case of alcohol poisoning. He said law enforcement officers usually see an increase in cases like this during summer, when teenagers are out of school.
"The biggest thing right now with people enjoying the waterways is the heat going up," Folks said. "It's very easy to get alcohol poisoning if you don't stay hydrated."
He said that people need to be aware of the dangers of underage drinking.
"It can lead to alcohol poisoning, which can cause damage to the liver, brain and internal organs," Folks said.
