The Yampa Valley chapter of Sweet Adelines tries to do something different with its spring show every year.
Last year, the women's singing group hosted a teen idol competition in addition to its regular performance of about a dozen songs.
This year, Sweet Adelines hired the Craig Performing Arts Project to put on a play during the show.
The performance will be Feb. 4 in the Moffat County High School auditorium.
The performing arts project will perform the play "Way, Way Off Broadway."
The melodrama is about a young woman from a small town who returns home after moving to a big city to make it in show business.
Sweet Adelines will perform songs as a chorus, while the actors perform the play.
Sweet Adelines has had actors perform during the shows before. But this is the first time the group has hired an acting troupe to perform an entire play, said Denise Whitney, director of the Yampa Valley chapter of Sweet Adelines.
The group wanted the play at its performance to be a melodrama and had heard the Craig Performing Arts Project wanted to perform one, Whitney said.
Cindy Chotvacs of the Craig Performing Arts Project is directing the play.
Chotvacs said she usually prefers to work on comedies. But the over-the-top acting in the melodrama has been fun, she said.
"We get to ham it up a bit," she said.
The performing arts project and Sweet Adelines will practice the musical together this week for the first time.
Since November, when the Performing Arts Project began casting, the two groups have practiced separately.
Whitney said she's looking forward to putting the musical elements and the acting together.
"I think it will fit together really nicely," she said.
Also new this year, Sweet Adelines and the Performing Arts Project will perform the show in the afternoon and the evening.
The two performances are to accommodate people who want to go to the show but don't want to stay up for the 7:30 p.m. performance, Whitney said. So the group will perform at 2 p.m., as well.
Tickets to the show are available from any Sweet Adelines or Craig Performing Arts Project member and at Loyd's Cleaner in Craig.
