Swimmers set for Jeffco

After swimming in a slow pool the previous meet, the Moffat County girls swim team is eager to dive into the pool in Arvada for the Jeffco meet this weekend.

"It's a faster pool with faster competition," junior Vanessa Murray said. "There's a lot more energy also."

The Jeffco competition is a two-day meet that is the largest of the regular season for the Bulldogs. There will be more than 20 teams at the meet.

"I'm used to having one or two people faster than me," senior Ashleigh McDonald said. "At Jeffco, the swimmers all around me are faster and push me."

McDonald and Murray are part of two events at the meet in which the Bulldogs hope to qualify for state. McDonald is three seconds off of qualifying in the 100-meter breaststroke.

"If I can get into the consolation finals, I should be close to qualifying," she said. "Getting into the finals will be a bonus for me."

Swimmers compete on Friday with the goal to swim in the top-16 times. The top eight times from Friday qualify for the finals, and the next eight make it into the consolation finals Saturday.

Murray will be a part of the 400-meter relay team with sophomores Kelsey and Caitlin Conci and senior Katie Gainor. The team expects to qualify for state. If the 400-meter relay team can get under the state mark, all three relays will qualify for state.

The Bulldog swimmers wouldn't back off at all this week in practice to prepare for the Jeffco meet, coach Jen Zimmerman said.

"We're going to train through the meet," she said. "I think the ones who are close will be pulled along by the competition."

The meet has cutoff times for individuals to swim in the varsity portion. There also is a JV swimming competition.

The Conci twins, McDonald, Murray, Gainor and Megan Innes are in varsity meets for the weekend.

"Megan slipped right under the times," Zimmerman said. "As a rookie swimmer, that is a great accomplishment."

Although the pool in Delta was slow Friday, the Bulldogs swam in a closely contested meet.

Moffat County scored 190.5 points, Delta had 204, and Junction scored 225.5.

Top finishes for Moffat in the meet were: 400 freestyle relay (Kelsey and Caitlin Conci, Murray, Gainor) first; 100 butterfly, Caitlin Conci second; 100 breaststoke, McDonald second, Katie Knez third; 100 backstroke, Caitlin Conci first; 100 freestyle, Kelsey Conci first, Vanessa Murray second; 200 freestyle, Alyssa Pierson third; 200 medley relay (Caitlin and Kelsey Conci, McDonald, Gainor) first.
