Shadow may go to nonprofits

The American Legion won't be the only local nonprofit group with a chance to take over control of Shadow Mountain Clubhouse.

At Tuesday's Moffat County commissioners meeting, officials will discuss offering the facility to other nonprofits.

"We feel like if we're talking to the American Legion, it is appropriate for us to listen to everyone else," Commissioner Saed Tayyara said.

Commissioners will discuss Shadow Mountain at 9:15 a.m. at the Moffat County commissioners chambers, 221 W. Victory Way.

American Legion Post 627 and the commissioners have discussed transferring control of Shadow Mountain for the past week.

Commissioners last month voted to close the clubhouse to cut costs in 2006, causing an outcry by some residents.

Residents who use the swimming pool and meeting rooms at Shadow Mountain criticized commissioners for the decision. They said the clubhouse's swimming pool was one of the few places in Craig where senior citizens and residents with disabilities could exercise.

The Legion wants to use the clubhouse as its headquarters and keep it open to the public, Post Commander Mel Shockley said.

Shockley has said taking over the clubhouse would serve two purposes. The veterans' organization would have a home and the residents who need Shadow Mountain could continue to use it, he said.

Since news came out last week that the Legion wants to keep the facility open, numerous people have called Shockley in support, he said.

"It seems like people would like to see us take it over," he said.

Tayyara said the county would like to work out an agreement to give the facility to a nonprofit.

"We're not talking about selling it right now," Tayyara said.

If the county agrees to let the Legion take control of Shadow Mountain, Shockley said the group could do so as early as Feb. 1.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, commissioners will sign a resolution to raise the rates at the Moffat County landfill.

Commissioners voted last month to raise the rates.
