County looking to fill board seats

Last year, 14 people applied for 12 seats on the Moffat County Land Use Board.

This year, mainly because of term limits, the board that advises the Moffat County commissioners on natural resource issues has four empty seats.

The Land Use Board is one of a few of the county's advisory boards that commissioners are having trouble filling with volunteers.

Commissioners advertised the open seats on the county's eight advisory boards last month. But more people stepped down from the boards than applied. That means the county still has open seats on boards such as the Hamilton Community Hall Board and the Planning and Zoning committee.

Commissioners will advertise again this week for the advisory boards with hopes of filling all 27 seats on the eight boards by Jan. 17.

"Whether it's Planning and Zoning or the Land Use Board, we need people from a variety of backgrounds," Commissioner Tom Gray said.

There aren't any specific requirements to serve on the boards, Gray said.

But volunteers must be able to give their time to serve on the boards and have an interest in the board's subject, Gray said.

Most of the boards meet for a few hours once a month.

Moffat County Natural Re----sources director Jeff Comstock, who oversees the Land Use Board, said the board's seven voting members and seven alternates are usually affected in some way by the county's land-use policies.

"They have a very strong interest in a lot of the natural resource issues," Comstock said.

Commissioner Darryl Steele, who has been a commissioner since 2003, said it's common for the commissioners to have some trouble finding volunteers for the boards.

Sometimes, residents want to volunteer but there are no empty seats, so they forget about it, Steele said.

When commissioners actively look for volunteers, they usually find two or three people who are interested, Steele said.

Anyone interested in volunteering for one of the advisory boards can call the Moffat County commissioners at 824-5517.
