The Moffat County High School girls swim team earned another state qualifying time in its last meet before winter break. Coach Jennifer Zim--merman said she was confident that her team would continue to qualify in events when it returns to competition this week.
"We are two events away from qualifying in all of the events we did last year," she said. "I think those swims will come in the next two weeks."
Sophomore Caitlin Conci broke her school record in the 100-yard backstroke at Aspen before winter break. Her time of 1 minute, 6.13 seconds was good enough for first place and a state qualification.
The Bulldogs won four events in a 100-75 loss to Aspen.
"A couple of disqualifications and fatigue hurt us at the meet," Zimmerman said. "I don't know if our (disqualifications) kept us from winning but it kept us from being closer."
The Bulldogs returned to the water as a team this week. During break, several of the team members swam on their own to stay in shape.
"Once we get back into it, we are going to prepare for the Jeffco, district and state meets," Zimmerman said.
The Jeffco meet in Arvada is traditionally the most competitive regular-season meet in which the Bulldogs compete.
Sophomore Kelsey Conci in the 100 freestyle along with the 400 freestyle relay team of Kelsey and Caitlin, senior Ashleigh McDonald and junior Vanessa Murray, could qualify for state at the Jeffco meet in two weeks, Zimmerman said. Kelsey was less than a second away from a state time in the 100 freestyle at Aspen.
If that happens, the Bulldogs will match their state qualifications of last year.
On Friday, the swimmers return to the pool to swim off the post-winter break rust in Delta.
The following were top-three finishes for the Bulldogs in the dual against Aspen: 50 freestyle, McDonald, second; 200 medley relay (Caitlin Conci, Kelsey Conci, Ashleigh McDonald, Vanessa Murray, first; 100 freestyle, Andria Dremel, third; 100 butterfly, Murray, second; 200 individual medley, Alyssa Pierson, third; 100 breaststroke, McDonald, first, 200 freestyle relay (Meghan Innes, Jessica Knez, Tiffney Woodbury, Pierson), third; 200 freestyle, Knez, first; 100 backstroke, Katherine Dodd, third; 500 freestyle, Katie Knez, second; 400 freestyle, (Kelsey Conci, Caitlin Conci, McDonald, Murray), second.
