CMS Staff Profile: Christie Palmer

What is your job title: Seventh-grade math teacher

Number of years in education: Three

How did you get into this profession? I wanted to show students that everyone can do math.

What is the most challenging part of your job? The most challenging part of teaching middle-school students is dealing with the outside life. The students often let what happens outside of school affect the learning.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? My face lights up when a student works hard and then says "Ah ha, I get it."

Briefly describe your most heartwarming teaching experience: When a student told me that she was not good at math until she looked at it through my eyes. She told me that my love for math made her begin to love math. She is now in high school and at the top of her math class.

What is a teaching tool or method that is unique to you? Most students do not think they should write in math class. I have the students write every day; they explain in words the thinking used to solve one of the homework problems.

What is one thing about your profession that you wish the public at large understood? How dedicated teachers are to their jobs.

What are your favorite activities when you are not at school? I love snowboarding and spending time with my husband and new baby.

What do you like most about Craig Middle School? I love the people I work with. If I am having a bad day, the staff members quickly turn it around by making me laugh.
