Police debunk homicide claim
A former resident's claim that she had witnessed a murder in Craig in November prompted police department investigators to look into the matter on Wednesday.
The claim, made by a 14-year-old girl who had moved to Littleton, proved to be false, investigator Ken Johnson said.
"We confirmed that it did not take place," Johnson said of the alleged homicide. "It was a false report."
The girl, a Columbine High School student, passed a note to a classmate indicating that she watched a murder happen in Craig while visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday. School officials heard of the student's claim and passed along the information to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The 14-year-old girl then gave a similar account of the alleged homicide to a detective from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
"She stayed with the story," Johnson said. "They were concerned down there so they called us. ... The detective thought that it didn't sound right."
Johnson said the police department had no reports of missing people or homicides during that timeframe. The girl later recanted her story, Johnson said.
