Bulldogs lose wrestling opener

No. 2 Broomfield solid against Moffat County

It took 31 seconds for Moffat County senior Nick Navratil to down his Broomfield opponent Friday night at Moffat County High School.

"I shot right, and sent him straight on his back," Navratil said.

Navratil went into Friday's dual anticipating a tough match against David Marone, a recent NCAA Division I signee.

What Navratil got was a match-up with Broomfield's Matt Carpenter and a season-opening win.

"I was a little rusty to start the season," Navratil said. "But it wasn't as bad as I thought."

Marone was unable to make the weight limit to wrestle Navratil, but both wrestlers are looking forward to the day when they can meet on the mat.

The No. 5 ranked Bulldogs lost the dual to the No. 2 ranked Eagles, 44-30.

Nine of the 13 matches ended in pins, with Broomfield taking five of the thirteen pins and winning four decisions.

Along with Navratil's match-opening pin, Moffat County had pins by seniors Brice Boling at 119 pounds, Jake Breslin at 125 pounds and senior Trenton Duarte at 171 pounds.

Duarte said after the match that he was happy with the way he wrestled, but that the team didn't wrestle as good as they could have.

"Hopefully today we'll go out and do better," Duarte said.

Head Coach Travis Masse said he was pleased with the way things turned out for his team, and gave compliments to the Moffat County program.

"Moffat is one of the most storied programs in the state of Colorado," Masse said. "I thought it would be a great opportunity to come and wrestle."

Masse said part of the reason for coming to Moffat County was to challenge his wrestlers.

Bulldog coach Roman Guti-errez was disappointed with the loss, but knew coming in that the dual with the Eagles was going to be tough.

"They have a good balance," Gutierrez said. "And I think it could have swayed either way."

Gutierrez said that now the team knows what they need to do to make improvements.

"I felt good about the way we wrestled," Gutierrez said. "I still think we need to get a little more aggressive."
