William Aymer “Bill” Strausborger

William Aymer "Bill" Strausborger, 94, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Canyon Hills Manor in Thermopolis, Wyo., after a short illness. A memorial is at a later date in Eugene, Ore., with interment in Rest Haven Cemetery in Thermopolis.

The oIdest of nine children, Bill was born June 30, 1911, in Denver, the son Franklin and Cora (Williams) Strausborger. The family homesteaded in Moffat County, where Bill worked on the farm and on the railroad for a time.

He joined the Navy in 1942 and served as master machinist on the U.S. Lancewood at Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag.

On July 20, l943, he married Jean Wilson in Oakland, Calif. After Bill's discharge from the service in 1945, the couple resided in Eugene, Ore., for the next 36 years. Bill was a diesel mechanic for various logging companies for 10 years. From 1956 to 1976, he was employed by Pape Brothers Caterpillar until retirement. His wife died in 1982. The next year, Bill moved to Mesa, Ariz., where he met Mildred Olsen Dorn. They were married July 18, 1984, in Colby, Wis. The couple moved to Thermopolis, Wyo., in 1999 to be near Bill's daughter.

A member of the Methodist Church, Bill was an avid reader. He enjoyed fixing things around the home.

In addition to both wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Franklin; three brothers, Leon, Raymond and Norman; and two sisters, Ruth and Betty.

Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn Strausborger of Thermopolis, Wyo.; one brother, Edwin of Eugene, Ore.; daughter-in-law, Carol of ValIejo, Calif.; two granddaughters, Stacy and Rebecca; and two sisters, Emma Greenwood of Gresham, Ore., and Doris VanValkenburg of San Leadro, Calif.

Mortimore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizen Center or Friends of the Library, Thermopolis, WY 82443.
