Deputies say Craig man struck officer

April 24, 2006

Moffat County Sheriff's deputies say a Craig man struck a deputy Friday, prompting them to use a TASER.

Kenneth E. Craig, 48, of Craig, was arrested Friday after an altercation with deputies at his home on Moffat County Road 7.

Deputies responded to Craig's home Friday after a neighbor called to report that bullets ricocheting from target practice at Craig's home were coming close to the neighbor's property, Moffat County Sheriff's Sgt. K.C. Hume said.

Hume said the neighbor asked Craig to shoot in a different direction, but Craig refused.

Hume said it isn't clear whether Craig was the person shooting or whether other people at his property were shooting.

When deputies arrived, Craig was uncooperative, Hume said.

Craig struck an officer in the chest with his right hand, Hume said, so officers used a TASER on him.

Craig may have been intoxicated, Hume said.

There were other people at Craig's property at the time of the incident, Hume said, but Craig was the only person arrested.

Craig was booked into Moffat County Jail on $1,500 bail and was charged with second-degree assault of a police official, resisting arrest and harassment.

The harassment charge stems from an altercation between Craig and his neighbor when the neighbor asked Craig to shoot in a different direction, Hume said.

Craig posted bail Monday and was released.
