Post office mailbox broken into

April 21, 2006

A mailbox at the Craig Post Office was broken into sometime Thursday night or Friday morning, Craig Police said Friday.

The box is one of two in the parking lot at the post office, 556 Pershing St.

Police are urging anyone who deposited mail in the box between about 4:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday to contact the police or the post office.

It isn't clear exactly when the box was broken into, according to a statement from Craig Police.

Postmaster William Barclay said a clerk noticed the box had been pried open when they went to empty the mail Friday morning.

Postal workers emptied the box at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Barclay said.

There was still some mail in the box when postal workers discovered the broken box Friday, Barclay said.

"But we don't know how much mail was in it," Barclay said.

Barclay said this was the first time he knows of that a mailbox at the Craig Post Office was broken into.

Police are encouraging anyone who deposited mail that contained payments to creditors to contact their banks and stop payment on checks as soon as possible. Police said cashier's checks and money orders deposited in the box also should be reported.

Police are asking anyone with information concerning the burglary to contact the department at 826-2360 or crime stoppers at 824-3535. Callers to CrimeStoppers can remain anonymous.
