Lions Club offers learner scholarships to adults
The Craig Noon Lions Club has shaken up their scholarship program this year.
Members said they realize that high school students have a number of options when pursuing money for college, and adults in the community have few places to seek financial aid. So, the club decided to make the change to funding adults with funds this year.
"We're looking at adults who may have children and are working for a living -- people trying to obtain a certificate or a license, or someone taking an advanced learning class," club President Christina Currie said.
The goal is to address the needs of a portion of the population that is being overlooked.
Lions Club member Alice Rigney reminds supporters that when they support club programs such as the Christmas tree sale, they are funding this scholarship program and other Lions Club events.
Currie said the money also could be used for books, equipment or software involved with higher learning, as well as travel or child care incurred during the education process.
Scholarships will be given before each of the college semesters -- summer, fall and winter. A total of $1,000 will be distributed to students, split among them according to their education needs.
Interested individuals need to fill out an application for consideration by the club. Candidates must be Moffat County residents and older than 25. Applicants should be enrolled in a program teaching them skills that will benefit Moffat County.
"We're hoping to have applications at Colorado Northwestern Community College, the Colorado Workforce Center and the (Craig) Chamber of Commerce. You can also ask any Lions Club member," Currie said.
The deadline for the first round of scholarship money is April 30.
