Golfers place 3rd in final

It's always an uneasy feeling when a golfer walks up to a tee box and sees no sign of the green.

The Moffat County golfers had that feeling multiple times Wednesday at the Eagle Vail course.

"I watched Collin (Jackson) hit three shots that we didn't think were bad, and we could never find any of them," coach Ken Harjes said. "It's just the way mountain golf courses work."

The course was new to every Bulldog, including Harjes.

"I wish I could have played it," he said. "There were some interesting holes."

Even with not knowing the course, three Bulldogs, junior Shawn Brookshire, sophomore Bryce Ponikvar and senior Zach Haddan shot in the 80s.

Brookshire led the team with an 81, which was good for fifth in the seven-team tournament. Ponikvar shot an 85, and Haddan turned in an 89. The team's 255 was good for third behind Durango and Battle Mountain.

"Zach fell victim to the course a lot when he putted today," Harjes said. "He said he had 10 three putts. It's not that the greens were fast, but balls would just keep rolling."

Jackson and senior Kyle Wilson struggled to the point that Harjes didn't think they wanted their scores printed.

The tournament was the final one of the regular season for the varsity golfers. They will play in Rangely on Friday, but it is not scheduled as a varsity tournament.

Now the work begins for Harjes. With the help of assistant coach Aaron Kessler, he has to decide which four golfers will represent the Bulldogs at the regional tournament.

"This is never easy for me or for the golfers," he said. "I still couldn't tell you who those four are right now."

Today and Friday, Harjes will look over stroke averages and season performances to try to pick the four best golfers for the regional. A lot of the consideration goes to who plays well at home, because the regional is at Yampa Valley Golf Course.

The regional tournament is Wednesday, and Harjes said he plans to announce the regional team by Friday.
