Anthony A. 'Tony' Montoya Jr.: 1935-2005

Anthony A. "Tony" Montoya Jr. of Craig, died July 29, 2005, in Grand Junction. He was 70.

Anthony A. "Tony" Montoya Jr. was born March 8, 1935, in Rollinsville, Colo., to Anthony A. Montoya Sr. and Antonio Roybal, one of five children.

Montoya spent his childhood in Steamboat Springs, Hot Sulphur Springs and Rollinsville. He graduated from Steamboat Springs with the Class of 1953, where he played football and skied with his best friend, Buddy Werner. On Dec. 15, 1956 he was married to MaryJane Schneider, and they were together for more than 48 years. Montoya was a resident of Craig for 51 years. He founded and owned several Craig businesses including A&A Distributors, Boyko Supply Company, and Five Star Enterprises. He also worked for the Denver Rio Grande Railroad for 18 years and for the Forest Service in Montrose. He was a member of the Moffat County School Board for 9 years, Colorado Jaycees, Elks Club, The River Rats, and the Men's Golf Association. Montoya enjoyed gardening in his yard for hours upon a day and won several "Yards of the Week" for his efforts and green thumb. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing -- on water and snow, vacations to Mexico, rooting for the Denver Broncos, cooking green chili and spending time with his family and friends. Tony was a very loving, giving man, and he now looks down on us as our Special Angel! We will miss him terribly!

Montoya is survived by his wife, MaryJane Montoya, of Craig; sons Mark (Shelly) Montoya and their children Madison and Rylan of Littleton, Donnie Montoya and his daughter, Ashley Montoya of Craig; daughter, Michelle Favorel of Centennial and her son, Miguel of Parker; brother, John (Sue) Montoya of Fort Laramie, Wyo.; sisters, Rose (Les) Hutton of Craig, and Mira (Ray) Muirhead of Tampa, Fla.; grandchildren Miguel (Melissa) Favorel, Candace Favorel, Madison and Rylan Montoya, and Ashley Montoya; great grandchildren Tyler Favorel, Zerik and Kailah Favorel, who lovingly called him "Pa", and numerous loving family members and friends.

Montoya was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Antonio Montoya, and one sister, Lucy Martinez, of Grand Junction.

Services were Aug. 4, 2005, at the First Christian Church in Craig. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to The Memorial Hospital Foundation Cardiac Unit, 785 Russell St., Craig, CO 81625, Attn: Montoya Memorial Fund.
