Craig is getting its first condominiums.

Developer Alpine Group LLC this month paid John La nearly $1.4 million for the Alpine Apartments with the intention of selling the units.

The group plans to sell the 35 apartments in the complex as condominiums.

Alpine Group has developed condominiums in Florida.

By law, the group must offer the 32 tenants in the complex right of first refusal.

The condominiums are meant to fill a void in the Craig housing market, said Jim Kotowski, a principal in Alpine Group.

Prices for the condominiums start at $79,000 and go up to $104,000, depending on unit size. The developers aim to lure buyers from Steamboat, where home prices are on the rise.

"Houses are out of reach for so many folks," Kotowski said.

Alpine Group plans to offer full financing. Tenants could buy a condominium without out-of-pocket expenses associated with home buying, said Kotowski, who also is with Coldwell Banker Silver Oak in Steamboat.

Alpine Apartments were built in 1973.

Units at the complex, 410 Tucker St., have been significantly refurbished in recent years, he said.

Alpine Condominiums already are for sale, he said.
