Laura Elder, a veteran journalist who has worked as a reporter, special projects manager and business editor, has joined the staff at the Craig Daily Press.

Elder succeeds Andy Smith as manager of newsroom operations.

"I am pleased to have Laura on board. When we set out in search of a new editor, it was important to find a candidate who not only possessed the skills and experience to do the job, but who could make a commitment to Moffat County," publisher Samantha Johnston said. "Laura is a great asset to our community."

Since 2000, Elder has covered business, education and general assignments for the Galveston County Daily News and the Corpus Christi Caller Times. She has won state and national awards for business, education and investigative reporting.

Before the Galveston County Daily News, Elder worked for six years at the Houston Business Journal, a weekly publication with a focus on small business.

As editor of the Craig Daily Press, Elder will coordinate news stories, photos and editorial projects.

"I'm excited to work for a newspaper that understands the importance of quality community journalism," she said. "I hope to continue this newspaper's tradition of bringing readers the news that's important to them."

Elder relocated to Northwest Colorado with her husband, Michael Smith, who was recently named editor of the Steamboat Pilot & Today.

After a busy hurricane season on the Texas Gulf Coast, Elder is adjusting to life in Colorado and soliciting advice on snow tires.

"It's a culture shock, but I'm so happy to be here and look forward to getting to know the people of Craig," she said.

Elder's passion for business writing and ability to understand tough subjects make her an ideal fit for Craig.

"Laura brings a level of professionalism and knowledge to this position that will take the Craig Daily Press to the next level," Johnston said. "We are fortunate to have such a dynamic, experienced leader in our organization."
