Job fair aimed at locals

The Craig Chamber of Com--merce and Colorado Workforce Center are teaming up for a job fair Monday.

The fair -- which runs from noon to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn -- will feature 19 local employers looking to hire full- and part-time employees.

Chamber of Commerce Ex--ec--utive Director Annette Gian--inetti said the chamber decided to hold the fair because some Chamber members are having trouble finding employees. Jobs with good pay and benefits are going unfilled, Gianinetti said.

Plus, Gianinetti said, some locals think they have to go to the other end of the valley to find a good job.

With winter coming and gas prices rising, the commute to Steamboat Springs will be more difficult in the coming months, she said, making jobs in Craig more attractive.

"I think they will be pleasantly surprised at the jobs, pay schedules and benefits (at the job fair)," Gianinetti said.

Monday's job fair will not only give locals a chance to meet with local employers but local employers a chance to meet employees.

"There are a lot of quality people who live here," Gianinetti said.

This is the first job fair for the Chamber, but Gianinetti said there could be more if this one is successful.

The Workforce Center, on the other hand, has done several job fairs in the past, including the teen summer job fair conducted every spring.

Linda Dill, labor and employment specialist at the workforce center, said the frequency of job fairs has gone down in recent years because the job market has slowed. But, Dill said, the local job market seems to be on the rebound.

Dill said anyone looking for a job should come to the fair dressed nicely and ready to interview.

"Come prepared because they will be interviewing on the spot," she said.

Potential employees should bring a resume if they have one and be ready to fill out applications.

The job fair is free to prospective employees. For employers, the cost is $20 for non-Chamber members and free for members.
