Joy VanCleave

1938-2005

Longtime Seibert resident, Joy (Bowser) VanCleave died Sept. 28, 2005, at her daughters' home in Craig. She was 66.

Joy Daisy Bowser was born Oct. 19, 1938, at the family homestead north of Kit Carson in Cheyenne County, to Forrest and Ruth Bowser, one of four children.

VanCleave graduated from Kit Carson High School in 1956 and married William Sherman Alderson Dec. 23, 1956, and to this union three children were born, Douglas William, Steven Leroy, and Brenda Sue.

She was in the Navy, which took her young family across the country, including Florida, California, and West Virginia. She divorced her husband in 1971. On Nov. 30, 1972, VanCleave married Emmett Wilbur VanCleave, and of this union a daughter was born, Kelli Ann. Also brought to this union were two children from Emmett's previous marriage, Tracie Lynne and Scott Allen. Shortly after their marriage, the family moved to Nebraska to help with Emmett's family farm. The family lived in Nebraska for 8 years, where VanCleave enjoyed the farm life. They then moved to Craig, where they spent five years before returning to the eastern plains of her childhood. They lived in Seibert, among her family, including her sister, Margaret Tovrea, her mother, Ruth Bowser, and others until forced by illness to move back to Craig two years ago to allow her daughters to help with her care.

To those who knew her best, she was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She was very creative, dabbling in painting, woodworking, sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. She enjoyed writing poetry and was a very avid reader, even having her own "library." One of her greatest loves was music; singing and yodeling in her younger days and listening to music, especially by her children later in life. Gospel music was playing softly as she went home to our Father.

VanCleave is survived by her husband, Emmett; children Doug (Mary) VanCleave, Steve VanCleave of Craig, Brenda (Jeff) Hershiser of Craig, Kelli (Brad) Poe of Craig, Tracie (Clay) Parker of Denver, Scott (Karen) Markham of Denver, and daughter-in-law, Tammy VanCleave of Seibert; grandchildren Eva, Angel, Christopher, Zachariah, Jessica, Jenasee, Steven, Chelsea, Corey, Brayden, and Kael; great-grandchild, William; brother, Marvin (Sandy) Curtis Bowser of Craig; sister, Margaret (Ron) Tovrea of Seibert; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

VanCleave was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Forrest Bowser, brother, Harvey Leroy Bowser, and nephew, Darryl Dwayne Tovrea.

Services were held Oct. 2, 2005, at the Community Hall in Seibert.
