How to decorate safely for the holidays
Safe Kids Colorado reminds parents to take precautions when decorating for the holidays.
Holiday decorations -- especially candles and electrical lighting -- can be fire hazards.
In 2002, candles started 18,000 home fires in the United States and caused 130 deaths, according to the U.S. National Fire Protection Association.
Decorative lighting should be labeled with the UL seal of approval.
When decorating, take the following precautions:
Inspect lights for exposed or frayed wires, loose connections and broken sockets.
Do not overload extension cords or outlets. Do not run cords under rugs.
Keep natural trees watered at all times. Do not put trees near a fireplace, space heater, radiator or heating vent.
Decorate trees with children in mind. Put ornaments that are sharp, have detachable parts or look like food or candy above children's reach.
Do not burn branches, treated wood or wrapping paper in a home fireplace.
