Police arrested two suspects on suspicion of trying to pass a counterfeit bill at Kmart last month.

Kristin Cortez, 18, and David Bair, 22, were arrested on a warrant Saturday after the two were identified in videotape provided by Kmart, Craig police Lt. John Forgay said. They each face two separate felony charges of possession of a forged instrument and theft.

Kmart officials previously told police they suspected a man and a woman tried to pass a counterfeit bill at the store April 21. A cashier at the store apparently identified the bill as fake and turned a couple away after they tried to purchase an inexpensive item.

Police couldn't investigate the alleged incident previously because the bill was not recovered, Forgay said.

Forgay said the case is being investigated.

It's not clear whether this case is related to other cases in which a rash of counterfeit bills in various denominations have been passed in Craig earlier this year, he said.

Forgay said police also aren't sure whether the fake bills are being produced locally or are inadvertently being passed on a local level.

Federal officials have become involved in the cases, he said.
