Cattle guard prices raised
For the third time in three years, the Moffat County commissioners have raised the price of cattle guards. The commissioners unanimously voted to increase the cost of cattle guards Tuesday so that the price will cover the county's expenses on materials. Materials include iron and cement for the cattle-guard base.
A 15-foot cattle guard costs the county $3,104 in materials and labor, but the county charges just $1,350.
A 20-foot cattle guard costs the county $3,615.07, but it charges only $1,678.
However, those won't be the actual costs for a cattle guard, because the county won't charge for labor or installation. The Road and Bridge Department builds and installs the cattle guards.
The county will adjust the price of the cattle guards to reflect the cost of steel.
Commissioner Darryl Steele said he has been trying for the past two years to raise the price of cattle guards so it covers the county's materials costs.
Before Steele became a commissioner, the county dropped the price of a cattle guard to $750.
One week later, Steele, who owns Steele Livestock of Maybell, said he bought a cattle guard.
The county only sells cattle guards that will be installed on county roads.
