Boy, 2, suffers burns in alleged child-abuse case
A 2-year-old Craig boy is being treated for serious burns to his legs at The Children's Hospital in Denver after police and Social Services determined the boy had been scalded by hot water and had not received medical attention, said Lt. John Forgay of the Craig Police Department.
Craig Police and Moffat Coun-ty Social Services recived a tip Sun-day about a report of suspected child abuse at a home in the 1200 block of Sixth Street.
The child was taken to The Mem-orial Hospital after the auth-orities noticed the child's injuries.
A boyfriend of the child's mother allegedly was responsible for the second- and third-degr-ee burns to young boy's body, Forgay said.
The man apparently tried to give the child a bath, he said. Authorities determined that the child had been burned nine days before the search.
The mother's boyfriend, Alfon-so Guevara-Nunez, 22, turned himself in after police issued an arrest warrant, Forgay said.
Guevara-Nunez is being held in the Moffat County Jail on an immigration hold, which isn't subject to a bond. He is being charged with a Class 4 felony of child abuse and neglect causing serious bodily injury.
Another 2-year-old and a 6-year-old who were found in the house were taken into custody by Social Services, Forgay said.
"It may be difficult for parents to determine whether the water is too hot (to run for a child's bath), but adults have the responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen," Forgay said. "If that happens, we want to make sure the child gets medical attention. We have a child with some pretty serious burns because of this."
