Student solves teacher’s dilemma
For three years, Craig Middle School social studies teacher Lori Dodge has requested a TV stand that allowed all students a view when movies were shown. For three years, her request was cut from the budget.
This year, it doesn't matter.
Seventh-grader Ryan Gerber found a solution. Actually, he made one.
With his grandfather's help and using his woodshop, Gerber constructed a TV shelf made especially for Dodge. It's so custom-made, that both sides have "DODGE" burned into them.
"She wanted one, and the school wouldn't let her, so I built her one," he said.
He said it took him about two weeks.
"It's so awesome," Dodge said. She was surprised by the gift, but not by the thoughtfulness Gerber demonstrated.
"He's a great student," she said.
Dodge said Gerber is always prepared, does his homework and is positive.
CMS secretary Beth Gilchrist describes Gerber as "the one with the sparkly eyes. He's always got a real happy look."
Gerber is sure that he likes school, but he's not so sure about why.
"It gives you something to do," he said.
Gerber plays the clarinet, likes to ride his bike and collects Hot Wheels.
He estimates that he's got more than 200, which he hangs from push pins on his walls.
Right now he's collecting the "star-spangled" set. He's got three of the five flag-covered cars.
