- During the weekend of Feb. 19 and 20, 16 volunteers, members and friends of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, assisted staff at the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge in various fencing projects, intended to allow safer passage of deer, elk and pronghorn on the refuge. The top wire on four miles of fence was lowered and tightened. More than a mile of old and useless fence was dismantled. Additionally, 13 miles of refuge boundary was patrolled and new refuge signs placed where needed. The group and refuge staff enjoyed a wild game potluck feast after the first day of work. There were opportunities for all to view a small flock of swans making their northern migration. Hundreds of waterfowl were seen in the refuge’s several large marshes. Jerry Rodriquez, refuge manager, reported that he was delighted to get these projects completed and would welcome another work weekend at the refuge again next year.
