Leona Hemmerich is resigning as manager of the Colorado Welcome Center in Dinosaur.
Hemmerich's last day is June 30, but she could stay on until her replacement is hired.
She has been at the welcome center since 1998.
Hemmerich discussed her resignation and the status of the center at Tuesday's Moffat County commissioners meeting.
Her job as owner of the Bedrock Depot in Dinosaur is the main reason she is resigning, Hemmerich said after the commissioners meeting.
Hemmerich also is resigning so she can voice her opposition to oil drilling in Harper's Corner near Dinosaur.
The Moffat County commissioners support oil drilling in Harper's Corner and the Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado, which oversees the welcome center, does not allow employees to oppose local governments.
"This frees me to be able to voice my opinion," Hemmerich said.
Officials from the AGNC did not return phone calls Tuesday.
Her supervisors reprimanded Hemmerich a few years ago when she openly opposed commissioners on wilderness issues.
She said leaving her job now will allow her to publicly oppose drilling and won't put the AGNC in a compromising position.
"This will make life easier for everyone," Hemmerich said.
Commissioner Tom Gray said Hemmerich has done a good job at the welcome center and he is sad to see her go.
