My wife Shawn and I, along with two little tow-headed boys Kody and Daniel, moved to Craig in July of 1979 -- almost 26 years ago. Why? Because the money was so good ($6.90 per hour) and there was a chance we could move back to our families in Montrose and have a good paying job with Colorado Ute.
One of the best things that ever happened to myself and our little family was that that opportunity never became a reality. We moved here and bought a mobile home in Shadow Mountain Village where the trailers were crammed in so tight that you could hear your neighbor next door.
Our boys have grown to men and Shawn and I are going to be leaving. I'm transferring with Xcel Energy to Grand Junction and we'll be gone at the end of the month. We will miss Craig and the people we have met the last 26 years and can think of no better place to have raised a family than Moffat County. Kody and Daniel both graduated from Moffat County High with the tools needed to enter college and get degrees, and now they are both starting successful careers and have promising futures. We would like to thank the teachers who helped mold our boys academically and the coaches who gave them character and the ability to face a challenge. If I could just get them to give us some grandbabies they would be almost perfect. This community is and has been a great place to live. Craig has changed a lot in 26 years, mostly for the better. I hope the city and county leaders strive to make this an even better place to live; they have while we've been here. We may lack a few amenities but we have so much more in other ways. This is a town that you know your neighbors will help when there's a need, where they'll watch out for your kids.
We're going to have a barbecue Saturday afternoon about 4 p.m. for our friends that want to say goodbye. This will give us a chance to thank you for your friendship and the memories. Hot dogs, hamburgers and maybe a beer or two. See You Then
