Dortha Fae Babb (1921-2005)

Dortha Fae Babb of Longmont, formerly of Craig, died June 3, 2005, at her home after an illness. She was 83.

Babb was born June 11, 1921, in Craig, to Roscoe J. (Doc) and Eula Fae Conway.

Babb's family came from Oklahoma in early 1921 to ranch and homestead at Fortification north of Craig. Babb was educated at the Fortification School and finished her education at Craig High School, graduating in 1938. She told many wonderful stories about that thriving Fortification community and the activities surrounding the school life there. On June 25, 1939, she married John J. Babb at the First Baptist Church in Craig. There were two daughters born to them, Sandra and Sharon.

She spent most of her life in Craig and retired in 1991 after serving 26 years as director of the Craig-Moffat County Library. It was during these years at the library that she enjoyed the friendship of the community that the library served. Truly the library was the center of her life and her focus was to make the library a place where everyone was welcomed and given the assistance they requested. After her retirement, Babb moved to Longmont to be near her daughter Sandra Adams, and to enjoy her great-granddaughter Melanie Lewis, and her granddaughters Jeanne Lewis-Wayne and Allison Pletcher. She was an energetic part of the family life there. Her brother Joe often visited her, as did other family members in the area.

Babb is survived by her daughters, Sandra Adams of Longmont, and Sharon (Larry) Pletcher of Craig; grandchildren John Adams, Jeanne Wayne, Tim Pletcher, and Allison Pletcher; brothers Roscoe Conway of Lexington, Okla., and Larry Joe Conway of Broomfield; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marine Lt. Col. John Adams and his wife Marj, are the parents of four children, Jeanne (Peter) Wayne is the mother of one daughter, Tim Pletcher and his wife Deanna are anticipating the birth of their first child, June Collins of Craig, Conway (Ruby) Irick of Craig, Clyda (LaVan) Palmer, Clay Conway, Bob Conway, and John (Linda) Conway of Utah, and William (Barbara) Conway of Idaho are her first cousins, Robert and Bea Babb of Craig, Earl and Mabel Babb of Grand Junction, and Louis and Martin Smith of Dalton, Ga., are her brothers and sisters-in-law.

Babb was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, William Conway.
